Typical usage: :Idiopathic, post-encephalitis and arteriosclerotic Parkinsonism.
Probable Side Effects: :Hallucinations, delirium, dyskinesias, mental disturbances, cardiac irregularities, bradyphrenia, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, palpitation, constipation, abdominal pain, GI upset, elevated alkaline phosphatase.
Drug Interaction: Levodopa is known to interact with other drugs like adrenaline, alprazolam, amitriptyline (HCl), benserazide (HCl), biperiden (HCl), bupropion (HCl), cabergoline, clonidine (HCl), dacarbazine, diazepam, diazoxide, droperidol, drotaverine, ephedrine, flupenthixol (HCl and Decanoate), furazolidone, gonadorelin (HCl), guanethidine, haloperidol, halothane, imipramine (HCl), iron salts, isocarboxazid, isoproterenol, lisuride, methyldopa, metoclopramide (HCl). Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.
Mechanism of Action: Striatal dopaminergic neurotransmission may be enhanced by exogenous supplementation of dopamine through administration of dopamine's precursor, levodopa. A small percentage of each levodopa dose crosses the blood-brain barrier and is decarboxylated to dopamine. This newly formed dopamine then is available to stimulate dopaminergic receptors, thus compensating for the depleted supply of endogenous dopamine.
Pregnancy Impact: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Impact During Lactation: Studies in breastfeeding mothers have demonstrated that there is significant and documented risk to the infant based on human experience, or it is a medication that has a high risk of causing significant damage to an infant. The risk of using the drug in breastfeeding women clearly outweighs any possible benefit from breastfeeding. The drug is contraindicated in women who are breastfeeding an infant.
