Alpha Lipoic Acid - Drug Information
Typical usage: :Lipoic acid is used as an antioxidant for the treatment of diabetes and HIV. It also has been used for cancer, liver ailments, and various other conditions.
Probable Side Effects: :Allergic skin conditions are among the few reported adverse reactions of lipoic acid administration in humans.
Drug Interaction: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Mechanism of Action: Lipoic acid have antioxidant properties It has the ability to chelate metals and to scavenge free radicals. Lipoic acid is easily absorbed and transported across cell membranes; thus, free radical protection occurs both inside and outside of cells. It is water- and fat-soluble, which makes it more effective against a broader range of free radicals than vitamin C (water-soluble) and vitamin E (fat-soluble) alone. Lipoic acid administration also increases intracellular levels of glutathione, an important antioxidant.

Methylcobalamin - Drug Information
Typical usage: :peripheral neuropathy, megaloblastic anaemia
Probable Side Effects: :Anorexia, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Drug Interaction: Decreased GI tract absorption with neomycin, aminosalicylic acid, H2-blockers and colchicine. Reduced serum concentrations with oral contraceptives.
Mechanism of Action: Mecobalamin is the neurologically active form of vitamin B12 and occurs as a water-soluble vitamin in the body. It is a cofactor in the enzyme methionine synthase, which functions to transfer methyl groups for the regeneration of methionine from homocysteine. In anaemia, it increases erythrocyte production by promoting nucleic acid synthesis in the bone marrow and by promoting maturation and division of erythrocytes.
Pregnancy Impact: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Impact During Lactation: There are no controlled studies in breastfeeding women, however the risk of untoward effects to a breastfed infant is possible; or, controlled studies show only minimal non-threatening adverse effects. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant.
