Cetirizine - Drug Information
Typical usage: :Allergic rhinitis, ocular symptoms like redness, lacrimation and itching. Urticaria, dermographism, atopic eczema and contact dermatitis, acute allergic reactions due to drugs, foods, insect bites.
Probable Side Effects: :Somnolence, insomnia, malaise, headache, dizziness, GI discomfort, dry mouth, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting; occasional hypersensitivity, epistaxis, pharyngitis, bronchospasm.
Drug Interaction: Risk of increased INR and epistaxis when taken together with warfarin. CNS depressants and anticholinergics may potentiate CNS depression of cetirizine.
Mechanism of Action: Cetirizine is a potent and highly selective antagonist of the peripheral histamine H1-receptor on effector cells in the GI tract, blood vessels and respiratory tract.
Pregnancy Impact: Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
Impact During Lactation: Drug which has been studied in a limited number of breastfeeding women without an increase in adverse effects in the infant; And/or, the evidence of a demonstrated risk which is likely to follow use of this medication in a breastfeeding woman is remote.
Dextromethorphan - Drug Information
Typical usage: :Dry cough.
Probable Side Effects: :Dependency, dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting, restlessness, mental confusion, excitation.
Drug Interaction: Dextromethorphan is known to interact with other drugs like abiraterone acetate, amiodarone (HCl), fluoxetine (HCl), haloperidol, mitomycin C, moclobemide, paroxetine, phenelzine, propafenone (HCl), quinidine, sibutramine. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.
Mechanism of Action: Dextromethorphan is an opioid-like drug that binds to and acts as antagonist to the NMDA glutamatergic receptor, it is an agonist to the opioid sigma 1 and sigma 2 receptors, it is also an alpha3/beta4 nicotinic receptor antagonist and targets the serotonin reuptake pump. Dextromethorphan is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, where it enters the bloodstream and crosses the blood-brain barrier.
Pregnancy Impact: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Impact During Lactation: There are no controlled studies in breastfeeding women, however the risk of untoward effects to a breastfed infant is possible; or, controlled studies show only minimal non-threatening adverse effects. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant.
Zinc - Drug Information
Typical usage: :Zinc is used for treatment and prevention of zinc deficiency and its consequences, including stunted growth and acute diarrhea in children, and slow wound healing. It is also used for boosting the immune system, treating the common cold and recurrent ear infections, and preventing lower respiratory infections. It is also used for malaria and other diseases caused by parasites. Zinc is also used for an eye disease called macular degeneration, for night blindness, and for cataracts. It is also used for asthma; diabetes; high blood pressure; acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS); and skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and acne.
Probable Side Effects: :Taking high amounts of zinc is likely unsafe. High doses above the recommended amounts might cause fever, coughing, stomach pain, fatigue, and many other problems.
