Fluticasone Propionate - Drug Information
Typical usage: :Allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic eczema, contact sensitivity reactions, dermatitis, discoid eczema, discoid lupus erythematosus, eczema, infantile eczema, neurodermatoses, perennial rhinitis, psoriasis, purigo nodularis, seborrheic dermatitis.
Probable Side Effects: :Glaucoma, cataract, growth retardation, adrenocortical suppression, decrease in bone mineral density, pruritus, dysphonia, allergic contact dermatitis, cough, oral candidiasis, local burning, hyperpigmentation, hypertrichosis, vocal cord myopathy, throat irritation, superficial blood vessels dilatation, superficial blood vessels thinning.
Drug Interaction: Fluticasone propionate is known to interact with other drugs like carbamazepine, cyclosporin A, frusemide or furosemide, phenytoin (Na), primidone, rifampicin, theophylline, warfarin (Na). Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.
Mechanism of Action: Fluticasone propionate binds to the glucocorticoid receptor with high affinity and produces alteration of transcription and protein synthesis, a decreased release of leukocytic acid hydrolases, reduction in fibroblast proliferation, prevention of macrophage accumulation at inflamed sites, reduction of collagen deposition, interference with leukocyte adhesion to the capillary wall, reduction of capillary membrane permeability and subsequent edema, reduction of complement components, inhibition of histamine and kinin release, and interference with the formation of scar tissue.
Pregnancy Impact: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Impact During Lactation: There are no controlled studies in breastfeeding women, however the risk of untoward effects to a breastfed infant is possible; or, controlled studies show only minimal non-threatening adverse effects. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant.
