Calcium Citrate - Drug Information
Typical usage: :Hypocalcaemia, Hypophosphataemia, Oncogenic hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, Renal tubular osteomalacia, Sporadic hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, Uraemic osteodystrophy, Uremic osteodystrophy, Vitamin D-dependent rickets
Probable Side Effects: :Depression of CNS, Coma, Ectopic mineralization.
Drug Interaction: Hypermagnesaemia may develop in patients on chronic renal dialysis.
Mechanism of Action: It promotes calcium absorption in the intestines and retention at the kidneys thus increasing serum calcium levels. It also increases renal tubule phosphate resorption consequently decreasing serum phosphatase levels, PTH levels and bone resorption.
Pregnancy Impact: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Impact During Lactation: There are no controlled studies in breastfeeding women, however the risk of untoward effects to a breastfed infant is possible; or, controlled studies show only minimal non-threatening adverse effects. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant.
Magnesium - Drug Information
Typical usage: :Dietary supplement and hypomagnesaemia.
Probable Side Effects: :Nausea, stomach upset, skin rash, acute toxicity. Watery diarrhoea, GI irritation,Nausea, vomiting, flushing, thirst, hypotension.
Drug Interaction: Oral magnesium salts may decrease absorption of bisphosphonates, quinolone antibiotics and tetracycline derivatives
Mechanism of Action: Magnesium is essential to many enzymatic reactions in the body, acting as a cofactor in protein synthesis and carbohydrate metabolism. 8.36 g of Magnesium chloride (hexahydrate) is equivalent to about 1 g of magnesium. Each g of magnesium chloride (hexahydrate) represents about 4.9 mmol of magnesium and 9.8 mmol of chloride.
Pregnancy Impact: Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
Impact During Lactation: Drug which has been studied in a limited number of breastfeeding women without an increase in adverse effects in the infant; And/or, the evidence of a demonstrated risk which is likely to follow use of this medication in a breastfeeding woman is remote.
