Aloe Vera - Drug Information
Typical usage: :Treating minor wounds, burns, eczema, and psoriasis. Moisturizing the skin.
Probable Side Effects: :Topical aloe vera might cause skin irritation. Oral aloe, which has a laxative effect, can cause cramping and diarrhea. This may cause electrolyte imbalances in the blood of people who ingest aloe for more than a few days. Aloe vera can also stain the colon, thus making it difficult to visualize the colon during a colonoscopy.
Drug Interaction: Aloe vera is known to interact with other drugs like digoxin, glimepiride, glyburide, insulin, pioglitazone, rosiglitazone, chlorpropamide, glipizide. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.
Mechanism of Action: Healing properties: Glucomannan, a mannose-rich polysaccharide, and gibberellin, a growth hormone, interacts with growth factor receptors on the fibroblast, thereby stimulating its activity and proliferation, which in turn significantly increases collagen synthesis after topical and oral Aloe vera. Aloe gel not only increased collagen content of the wound but also changed collagen composition (more type III) and increased the degree of collagen cross linking. Due to this, it accelerated wound contraction and increased the breaking strength of resulting scar tissue. Effects on skin exposure to UV and gamma radiation: The administration of aloe vera gel, an antioxidant protein, metallothionein, is generated in the skin, which scavenges hydroxyl radicals and prevents suppression of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in the skin. It reduces the production and release of skin keratinocyte-derived immunosuppressive cytokines such as interleukin-10 (IL-10) and hence prevents UV-induced suppression of delayed type hypersensitivity. Anti-inflammatory action: Aloe vera inhibits the cyclooxygenase pathway and reduces prostaglandin E2 production from arachidonic acid. Effects on the immune system: Alprogen inhibit calcium influx into mast cells, thereby inhibiting the antigen-antibody-mediated release of histamine and leukotriene from mast cells. Antiviral and antitumor activity: These actions may be due to indirect or direct effects. Indirect effect is due to stimulation of the immune system and direct effect is due to anthraquinones. The anthraquinone aloin inactivates various enveloped viruses such as herpes simplex, varicella zoster and influenza. Moisturizing and anti-aging effect: Mucopolysaccharides help in binding moisture into the skin. Aloe stimulates fibroblast which produces the collagen and elastin fibers making the skin more elastic and less wrinkled. It also has cohesive effects on the superficial flaking epidermal cells by sticking them together, which softens the skin. The amino acids also soften hardened skin cells and zinc acts as an astringent to tighten pores. It also has anti-acne effect. Antiseptic effect: Aloe vera contains 6 antiseptic agents: Lupeol, salicylic acid, urea nitrogen, cinnamonic acid, phenols and sulfur. They all have inhibitory action on fungi, bacteria and viruses.
Pregnancy Impact: No Studies Available
Impact During Lactation: No Studies Available
Chlorhexidine Gluconate - Drug Information
Typical usage: :Abrasion, bladder irrigation, bleeding, burns, cuts, gingivitis, infected cracked skin, minor burns, minor scalds, pleural and peritoneal irrigation, skin infections, skin lesions, sunburn blisters, ulcers, urethral infection.
Probable Side Effects: :Shortness of breadth, hemolysis, hypersensitivity reactions, photophobia, slurred speech, allergic skin reactions, nausea, vomiting, allergic reactions, photosensitivity, skin irritation, skin sensitization, irritation of sensitive tissues, dermatitis, taste disturbances, teeth discoloration.
Drug Interaction: Chlorhexidine is known to interact with other drugs like povidone-iodine. These interactions are sometimes beneficial and sometimes may pose threats to life. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.
Mechanism of Action: Chlorhexidine's antimicrobial effects are associated with the attractions between chlorhexidine (cation) and negatively charged bacterial cells. After chlorhexidine is absorpted onto the organism's cell wall, it disrupts the integrity of the cell membrane and causes the leakage of intracellular components of the organisms.
Pregnancy Impact: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Impact During Lactation: There are no controlled studies in breastfeeding women, however the risk of untoward effects to a breastfed infant is possible; or, controlled studies show only minimal non-threatening adverse effects. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant.
Sulphadiazine - Drug Information
Typical usage: :Chancroid, GI infections, malaria, nocardiosis, pneumonia, prevention of rheumatic fever recurrence, respiratory tract infections, superficial infections, toxoplasmosis, urinary tract infection.
Probable Side Effects: :Granulocytopenia, nephrotic syndrome, serum sickness like illness, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, rashes.
Drug Interaction: Sulphadiazine is known to interact with other drugs like ascorbic acid, chlorpropamide, methotrexate, phenytoin (Na), procaine, pyrimethamine, tolbutamide, torasemide, trimethoprim, warfarin (Na). Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.
Mechanism of Action: Sulfadiazine is a competitive inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase. This enzyme is needed for the proper processing of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) which is essential for folic acid synthesis. The inhibited reaction is necessary in these organisms for the synthesis of folic acid.
Pregnancy Impact: There is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience or studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Impact During Lactation: There is positive evidence of risk to a breastfed infant or to breastmilk production, but the benefits of use in breastfeeding mothers may be acceptable despite the risk to the infant (e.g. if the drug is needed in a life-threatening situation or for a serious disease for which safer drugs cannot be used or are ineffective).
